This maternity session with Heena and Pranay at the Holiday Inn North Shore Skokie Hotel followed an elaborate Indian baby shower steeped in traditions and rituals just as the many Indian Weddings and Portrait Sessions I have documented.

During the shower, known as the Godh Bharai, a group of women, usually relatives of the mother-to-be gather around her and perform several rituals. These rituals focus on blessing the expectant mother by filling her lap with rice, silver coins, and nuts before tying a special thread around the wrist of her right hand. This wristband is given to protect the mother and unborn child from evil spirits.

An Indian baby shower is an elaborate, festive event and traditionally an all-women event although modern celebrations include both genders.  The mother-to-be dresses as a bride, adorned with flowers and dressed in a traditional sari. Together with family and friends, the baby is welcomed into the family and the mother’s lap is literally filled with abundant blessings.

I was able to take a variety of lovely shots with Heena and Pranay, as well as their family members, outside of the reception area. You’ll see that these images capture their love for each other and for their unborn child. These two are sure to make awesome parents as they are already a strong team. Enjoy…
